La Plata - History

To make the city of Buenos Aires as the Capital of the Republic, in September 1880, the then Governor of the Province, Dr. Dardo Rocha, drives the proposal of having a city as the seat of the provincial authorities. Established a Commission of preparatory studies and several were the places proposed as seat of the new city: Campana, Lomas de Ensenada and Zarate, among others. Finally, on March 14th of 1882, in his message to the legislature, Governor Rocha inclines his election by the landscape called Lomas de Ensenada de Barragán. Proposal is accepted, sanctioning the law in this regard on May 1 of the same year. The city of Ensenada is declared the Capital of the province and  the Executive Branch is autorized to create a city to be called La Plata, standing its cornerstone in what today is la Plaza Moreno, on November 19th of 1882 . The harmonic plan with whom the project was faced, directed by Pedro Benoit, is one of the most significant examples, worldwide, of the urbanism of the nineteenth century. The city plan, designed with all the urban planning of the time, deserved gold medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition. The first population was basically composed by workers of all trades: carpenters, bricklayers, blacksmiths, etc; being Italian the major nationality.
